BT has again raised its prices in a surreptitious manner of course! Many respondents to the Ofcom consultation about BT being freed from any further controls in pricing warned Ofcom that BT would abuse its continued virtual monopoly in this sort of gambit. But Ofcom paid no attention of course, since they wanted to give full pricing independence to their old telecoms buddies, so they could retrieve some of their lost call traffic profits (due to being uncompetitive) whatever the consequences to the consumer. See here TIM

No doubt this indicates that the next focus for price increase again will be on line rental, in which BT still has an almost unaffected monopoly. Again Ofcom was warned that this would occur. No doubt the imminent increase in line rental will again be clouded with deliberate juggling and manipulation (in a Brown-like tinkering) to deceive unaware consumers into believing that there have overall been reductions in price (if they take all their services from BT). These sorts of dirty commercial tricks are exactly what a virtual monopoly will always do to slaughter competition. A monopoly never attempts to compete on a proper commercial basis by cutting prices and using their economies of scale. (Look at any Economics text book. This is why monopolies or virtual monopolies are such a bad thing.) That is why the only effective solution to these ongoing abuses is to break up the vested interests of BT into a non-profit making network structure, which all telecoms carriers may use on an equal basis, and a separate BT carrier/service provider which would have to compete on an equal basis with all other carriers. The reason that Ofcom did not and will not take this required action is as with everything else which they do; to avoid upsetting and punishing their cronies for their performance failures and corruption. This is despite the fact that the principal brief and responsibility of Ofcom in telecommunications is to protect the interests of the consumer - not BT!
Ofcom are ineffectual
